War on calories, Carillion pensions
Consumer affairs with Winifred Robinson, including the people with Carillion pensions, still unclear about their future income, and the new clampdown on calories in food.
Public Health England's clampdown on the calories in our food will dwarf its actions on sugar. That's according to their leading nutritionist Dr Alison Tedstone, who is in charge of setting new targets for the food industry. Much like sugar in chocolate bars, companies will have to reduce the calories in processed foods like pizza, burgers, ready meals and sandwiches. But how easy is it to cut the calories in food while retaining the taste, and will it just mean smaller portions?
Tens of thousands of Carillion pension holders are waiting to hear what will happen with their pensions now the company has gone into liquidation. Carillion had 14 final salary pension schemes in the UK, with nearly 28,000 members. Some pension holders have received letters saying they will receive 90% of their money, via the Pension Protection Fund, the so-called pensions lifeboat. Former Carillion workers have complained to You & Yours that pension promises should always be honoured in full. We speak to the Pension Protection Fund about how it works and the limits of what it can do, when a company fails.
