Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

It鈥檚 daunting to take the mic in such company, such skilled microphone-users. Only yesterday, a banana stood in for a mic as I sang along to my mp3 player. I call the playlist 鈥楶orous鈥: lots of very soft rock. But did I have 鈥渢he Voice鈥? My four-year-old turned her chair around, only to say, and I quote: 鈥淒addy, you鈥檙e not a popstar 鈥 you鈥檙e a person!鈥

Well, I gotta feeling popstars are people too. The ones here look pretty real to me 鈥 used to life鈥檚 highs and lows, that reach all of us: from popstars to actors to, forgive my daughter, 鈥減eople鈥. They say it鈥檚 tough at the top, and it鈥檚 tough at the bottom, and I can report it can be pretty tricky around the middle.

This week a comedian pal of mine had a disastrous audition for a certain TV talent show 鈥 even more brutal than my four-year-old. So he did what many of us stand-ups do... He invoked 鈥楳illican鈥檚 Law鈥. Comic Sarah Millican proposed this: after a tough gig, you can mope, rant and rail as much as you like, till 11am the next day. Then you draw a line under it, move on 鈥 not taking to the next gig the weight of the last.

But鈥 if you nail the gig, storm it, knock it out the park 鈥 same deal. Your smugness expires at 11am next day. Next gig, we start from scratch.

Christians, Jews and Muslims unite in the belief that we can bring to God our joys and woes, our highs and lows, in prayer, in lament.

There鈥檚 a song we sing in church 鈥 and in my kitchen, on my Porous playlist 鈥 called Blessed Be Your Name: 鈥淲hen the sun鈥檚 shining down on me鈥hen I鈥檓 found in the desert place鈥 Blessed Be Your Name.鈥

Sharing those moments helps me. But whether it鈥檚 God鈥檚 Law or Millican鈥檚 Law or... I don鈥檛 know, coleslaw 鈥 here鈥檚 to celebrating at our highest, to ranting and railing at our lowest, and here鈥檚 to those 11ams, whenever we reset, ready for the next job.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

So God bless you and you and him and her and us and them, in our post-gig smug zones, traumas and weeks off. I鈥檒l relinquish the microphone and go back to bananas.
