Live Long, Work Long?
The explosion of old age - as life expectancy continues to rise, is the state any closer to a clear strategy in terms of work, pensions and, in the end, care?
We're living longer, we're expected to work longer, and soon, it seems, early retirement will be anyone who retires before they're 70 - but has society, the state in all its functions really got to grips with the myriad of issues associated with an ever-growing older generation? Are they viewed more as a problem rather than a gift made possible through improved standards of living and medical advances? And what is elderly these days? 65, 75 or even 80? Presenter Audrey Carville discusses these issues with social gerontologist Dr Gemma Carney, Consultant geriatrician Professor Des O'Neill and former Presbyterian Moderator Dr Norman Hamilton.
