Pause for Thought: 'I'd gone to help people. They ended up helping me.'
From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister: 聽 聽 聽聽
This is Faith in the world Week on Radio Two and the question everyone鈥檚 asking is 鈥淲ho is my neighbour?鈥 I have absolutely no doubt how to answer that question for myself.
I began my life as a Methodist minister in Haiti, a desperately poor country right in the middle of the Caribbean, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. I鈥檇 been sent there because I spoke French, the official language of Haiti. My intentions were simple 鈥 I was going to raise them out of their poverty and find solutions for all their problems.聽
There was one difficulty. I had forty eight churches to care for, some hours away by horse or boat, and no one in any of those remote communities spoke French. I was literally speechless, useless and pointless. I could do nothing, nothing at all. I fell into a deep, self-pitying depression.
But only for a while. The simple people in the mountains of Haiti, peasant folk described by one anthropologist as 鈥渢he wretched of the earth,鈥 rallied to the cause. They must have sensed my need. They took me into their homes, shared their simple meals, made me an honorary member of their families, taught me their language, their culture, their sense of humour, their survival skills and so much more. I heard calypso singing where it had been invented. I鈥檇 gone to Haiti to help the people there. They ended up helping me.
And healing me too. I鈥檇 grown up in poverty and destitution but my education had made me cocky and, if I鈥檓 honest, more than a touch arrogant. Being looked after by the poor people of Haiti had put me back in touch with my deepest self. The peasant people of Haiti did for me what all the king鈥檚 horses and all the king鈥檚 men couldn鈥檛 do for Humpty Dumpty 鈥 they put me back together again.
The depth of my Christian faith and my life as a preacher of good news can easily be put down to these folk who were neighbours to me in my hour of need and I鈥檓 glad to have this opportunity to say so.
