Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:听听听听听听听

It鈥檚 strange to see the name Jesus appearing so regularly on the back pages of our newspapers. Gabriel Jesus, yes that one, was up to his old tricks again over the weekend, scoring another two goals for Manchester City in their defeat of Stoke. 7 鈥 2 is a thrashing by any measure and my poor wife, a Stoke supporter, suffered a moment or two of deep gloom on hearing the result. This man Jesus gets on the scoresheet again and again. Eight goals in eight games is astonishing and we can only guess what the rest of the season is going to bring.

听The commentators are going wild in their praise of his young talent; one of them suggested that Jesus is heading to become the successor to Lionel Messi as the best player on the planet. And since Messi scored all three goals in Argentina鈥檚 win over Ecuador last week, and almost single-handedly got his team into next year鈥檚 World Cup finals, that鈥檚 quite a claim.

听For people like me, of course, the Jesus brand is very important. His name runs through the pages of the New Testament and pops up every Sunday in the sermons that I preach. So this left-field invasion of what I might consider my territory takes just a little adjustment on my part. I know that some fellow believers wince at seeing the precious name of Jesus all over the sports pages. But I can鈥檛 say it bothers me too much.

听Indeed, I just love the headlines: 鈥淛esus saves City鈥 or even 鈥淛esus, City鈥檚 Messiah鈥 have clearly given sub-editors a great deal of fun. And for me, anything that keeps the name of Jesus in the public domain is good for my business too 鈥 all publicity is good publicity as far as I鈥檓 concerned.

I like to tell people how Jesus has been scoring goals for me since I turned to him in my early twenties, that he鈥檚 no flash in the pan, that he goes on getting results, year after year, decade after decade. I鈥檇 love to plaster that success all over the back pages. I really would.
