Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Comedian & writer Paul Kerensa

聽The nearest we got to a Grand Design was a kitchen renovation. For months, the builders moved in, and we lived alongside them shoulder to burly shoulder. Some days, the washing machine became my desk-slash-dining-table, we cooked in the loo sink鈥 oh and my wife was pregnant 鈥 so space in the house was shrinking on all sides. Let alone for the growing baby鈥 I don鈥檛 know if babies get claustrophobia; I certainly did.

聽For us, the baby was a grand design of her own, with, as we saw it, a grand designer behind it. While we pored over our architect鈥檚 blueprints, it was nice to think of someone up there doing likewise for our little girl 鈥 a limb extension here, a brain rewiring there. A great construction takes months: nine and a bit, in her case.

聽She was born at home, on the building site, just as the builders left for the day. Of the many deliveries we had that year 鈥 our girl was certainly the most welcome. With scarily, no paperwork.

聽Next morning, the builders turned up, matter-of-fact to the last, not knowing that bump had turned into baby鈥 and not giving two hoots. My wife welcomed them holding this brand-newborn. The builder just said, 鈥淲here do you want the cement?鈥 Then again, he had a job to do.

聽I聽see many jobs to do when I turn on the news. Building work needed in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti鈥 Homes devastated by hurricanes鈥 where even basic designs would be welcome. I guess if we look up and see a roof, look left and right and see walls, we鈥檙e lucky.

聽They say home is where the heart is 鈥 so maybe our heart can be for our home planet, and those still dreaming of a home. I鈥檓 no great builder 鈥 the only tool in my bag is a crowbar, so I鈥檒l get crowbarring: wherever we Liv, and made a home, whatever we鈥檝e made at home 鈥 may those simple four walls be an Oasis to so many.

聽Meanwhile we can build up not tear down 鈥 sing, play, cook, construct not destruct. Because ultimately we鈥檙e all born on a building-site 鈥 it鈥檚 what we build on it that then matters.
