At the halfway stage of their epic journey through Vietnam, the group have reached Quang Tri Province, which saw the fiercest fighting in the Vietnam War. The region is still experiencing its legacy, with unexploded bombs maiming local people. After stepping on a mine in 1996, Tu has a simple wooden leg which cost $30. Vicky tells him how her leg was amputated after the Alton Towers accident and shows him her own prosthetic.
Later, the journey allows the 4x4 drivers to discuss relationships and internet dating, as Vicky and Mary reveal they have both received unwanted attention. At the Linh Ung Monastery near Da Nang they help volunteers deliver meals to a local orphanage. But for Louise Halvey, who has progressive hearing loss, the pressure of socialising in a hearing group is taking its toll. Steve Brown is also struggling. At the beach, while many of the group head for the water, he is left frustrated. Finally, the full moon lantern festival at Hoi An is the perfect place for reflection.
