Ten years ago today queues were forming outside Northern Rock. Customers wanted to withdraw their savings when news broke that the bank had asked for help from the Bank of England. The event sparked the trigger of the economic downturn, and ten years on we'd like to hear how that recession affected you?
Gone are the days of the 125% mortgage, and easily obtainable credit. Banks have become more conservative and thorough checks are made for people wanting mortgages, but that means younger people trying to get on the housing ladder can't save enough of a deposit to meet the criteria.
The sudden drop in house prices meant some homeowners were in negative equity - have you managed to get out of negative equity yet?
Interest rates still remain stagnant affecting savers, and pay growth remains slow as inflation rises. It's prompting more of us to take out loans- but isn't this what got us in a mess in the first place? The Bank of England recently warned consumer debt was up 10% last year- largely due to car finance deals.
