For The Fallen
Kirsty Young presents live coverage of the commemorations to mark the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele from Flanders in Belgium.
Kirsty Young presents live coverage of the commemorations to mark the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele from Flanders in Belgium. 100 years on from the eve of this battle, events begin at the Menin Gate in Ypres, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, together with the King and Queen of the Belgians, dignitaries and descendants of the men who fought, gather for the traditional Last Post ceremony. The haunting sounding of the bugle call remembers all the men who served and fell fighting for peace in Flanders during the First World War.
This is followed by a unique and dramatic event in the Market Square of Ypres that reflects on the story and sacrifice of a hundred years ago. The imposing facade of the historic Cloth Hall is illuminated with projections, together with special live performances from artists including Dame Helen Mirren Alfie Boe, War Horse and the cast of The Wipers Times introduced by Ian Hislop. Throughout the evening, Kirsty is joined by special guests in the studio and Dan Snow reports from the streets of Ypres.
