Bhan na Sgìre/Mobile Vans

Episode 19 of 21

Documentary taking a nostalgic look at the service provided by vans in Scotland's rural island communities.

Air feadh Alba agus gu sònraichte anns na h-eileanan an Iar, bha a-riamh duilgheadas ann an àitichean iomallach, faighinn gu àite far am faigheadh tu an stuth a dh'fheumadh tu bho latha gu latha. Eadar cnocain, tiona agus siugaichean, seirbheisean banca no fiù's rudan cho simplidh ri uinneanan, tha cothrom air a bhith ann ge-tà na rudan seo a thoirt gu gach doras. Bha bhanaicheach rim faicinn fad is farsaing, agus bha cuideachd fiù 's fir a' tighinn air baidhsagalan , leithid na fir ris an cainnte Seonaidh Uinnein. Siùbhlaidh sinn air feadh nan Eileanan an Iar agus coinnichidh sinn ri cuid a tha fhathast a' tabhainn seirbheis san là an-diugh, agus cuid a chuimhnicheas air na seann làithean. Beachdaichidh sinn cuideachd air dè cho feumail 's a tha na goireasan seo ann an saoghal a tha air atharrachadh gu mòr. Bhan na Sgìre - sùil air seirbheis a th' air a bhith riatanach dha coimhearsnachdan dùthchail na h-Alba.

Throughout Scotland and particularly in the Western Isles, it was always a challenge in remote areas to get to shops to be able to get the various things needed for day to day life. From jars and tins, to jugs, banking services and even things as simple as onions, there has been the opportunity to deliver all of these to rural areas. Vans were commonplace, and there were even men on bicycles, such as the men who were knows as 'Onion Johnnies'.

We take a journey through the Western Isles and meet those who are still providing these lifeline services today, and also hear of the memories of many of the old days. We'll also consider what place these services have in today's world which has changed so much.
