Pause For Thought

Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London

Ìý

This last weekend I had one wedding, two christenings and a funeral.

Ìý

On Friday, I married Luke and Annabel, and being a cool kinda guy, Luke had – not one, not two but three best men who progressed in size from 5/10 to six foot seven. When I turned to them for the rings, they exploded into a choreographed movement that cradled the rings toward me on their three upturned right hands, one on top of the other.

Ìý

It’s not the first time I have burst into laughter when best men hand me the rings. One would-be comedian presented me with two circular crisps. Uncertain how I would respond, the congregation paused until I said a blessing over the crisps and invited the giggling couple to exchange and eat them in an unconventional holy moment of ‘nuptial communion’.

Ìý

I think it’s essential for religion to discover more humanity, and nothing is more human than laughter. Back in the mists of time, religion emerged from the human capacity to play – which makes me wonder why the two things have become such poor bedfellows. Jesus himself was the master of festivity and satire – the holy fool who partied with outcasts, turned water into wine and flouted rigid religion.

Ìý

One of the christenings offered a different moment of touching humanity. A beautiful single parent mum came with a dozen supporters seeking a blessing for her little boy on his first birthday. After the baptism, I invited everyone to offer a symbolic prayer for the child. Explaining that a prayer is really a special form of wish, I beckoned each person to approach the font, collect a small stone from a basket, then hold it in their hand until they found the wish they wanted to offer. Then they dropped the stone into the water as a form of prayer.

Ìý

They say it takes a village to bring up a child. each member of this little community, including several children, stood for no less than thirty seconds, grasping a stone in silent contemplation before plunging it into the font. There were some tears. I noticed. And plenty of laughter afterwards. One of my most pleasurable priestly duties was to photograph the happy bunch in front of the font before they left for a well-deserved tipple.

You can’t call this work, can you?
