Suspended DUP MLA Jonathan Bell standing as independent unionist in Assembly election
Suspended DUP MLA Jonathan Bell tells the Nolan Show why he is standing as an independent unionist in Assemly election.
Breaking story this morning - Jonathan Bell is this morning announcing that he is standing in the election. The former DETI minister was suspended from the DUP after he broke ranks to give an astonishing interview over the Cash for Ash scandal. There has been speculation over his political future ever since. Would he walk away from politics or would he stand in the forthcoming election. We can reveal this morning that he is going to stand as an independent unionist. He joined Stephen to tell him why.
Also on the programme, another day and another row between the DUP and Sinn Fein - this time over the Irish language. As Arlene Foster launched the DUP's election campaign yesterday she gave a blistering warning to her political rivals. Sinn Fein leader Michelle O'Neill said she wouldn't get drawn into a war of words, while Gerry Adams poked fun at the outburst. The row comes a matter of weeks after Edwin Poots and Conor Murphy argued on this programme over whether an Irish Language Act was part of the St Andrew's Agreement. It's another green and orange issue that the two parties are at complete odds over. What impact could these sort of spats have if the two are to share power again after the election?
Stephen talks to former Sinn Fein MLA Daithi McKay, DUP's Nelson McCausland and SDLP's Patsy McGlone. And, pigeon-gate - birds stuck in old Belfast BHS store. Should we be outraged? Or is it just a couple of dirty birds?
