Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

One of the most rewarding times in your life is when you finally find the courage to let go of what you cannot change. I鈥檓 afraid it happens me often because I have to learn over and over again that it takes only one person to make me happy and change my life 鈥 and that鈥檚 ME.

I learn a lot when things go wrong, as things are bound to do. You know how it goes yourself. Life gets complicated; it overwhelms us; it seems our cup is filled to the brim with rejection and disappointment. That鈥檚 when I need real friends to remind me that pressure can be positive. After all 鈥渃rushed grapes produce delicious wine.鈥

Deep within us is that irresistible pull to what is negative. If I don鈥檛 transform that negativity I鈥檒l transmit it to others. Needless worry is like a virus of the mind; it brings everyone down. The best antibiotic is to be positive.

Step off the treadmill of worry and allow the healing to happen. If I鈥檓 the architect of my own unhappiness, then I can become the architect of a happier more productive life. Change your vision and you鈥檒l change your attitude. Change your attitude and you鈥檒l change your life.

Vincent Van Gogh, the artist from whom I draw infinite inspiration, was crippled by depression. During his short life, nobody appreciated his work. He had to steel himself to continue painting. His secret was this conviction -: 鈥淚f you hear a negative voice within you, saying 鈥榶ou cannot paint,鈥 then start painting and the voice will be silenced.鈥

He quoted St Paul who overcame his many doubts by telling himself 鈥淚 can do all things in Him who makes me strong.鈥 (Philippians 4:13). I鈥檓 slowly learning that when I can鈥檛 change what is dragging me down I need to change how I manage it. Never ruin someone else鈥檚 happiness simply because you haven鈥檛 found your own. And never put the key to your own happiness in someone else鈥檚 pocket.
