Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rev鈥檇 Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:

In the church it鈥檚 the Feast of the Epiphany today, when we remember the three wise men coming to the stable at Bethlehem, with the weirdest baby shower in literature. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh 鈥 symbolic gifts which tell us this is no ordinary baby 鈥 but you wonder what Mary must have made of them, as the visitors returned home by another way.

I have received unusual gifts for Epiphany too: oats, macronutrients, and whey. My friend and fellow elite athlete Neil Back, former captain of the England rugby team, has put me on a health regime, determined to rescue me from greed and gravity as my fifties proceed.

And he鈥檚 right to: I have found that the tiny steps of dachshunds, of which we have four, are insufficient even on a brisk walk to halt the expansionist effects of Mrs. Needle鈥檚 Christmas cake, and lest I lose the rippling six feet of steel the good Lord gave me, it鈥檚 going to be a January of strict observance at Finedon Vicarage.

The weeks and months ahead are going to be all about discipline, discipline, discipline, doing for the body what prayer does for the soul, reformed through the diligent repetition of set exercises; and I guess lots of other people are trying to do the same. 听

In truth, I have never really been one for New Year resolutions. A strong start so often leads to a quick fade, as our good intentions stumble over our hidden impulses; and I鈥檝e never been able to shake off the suspicion that underlying our plans for self-improvement is very often a lurking self-hatred, which fixes on our extra inches and wheezy exertions and makes way too much of them. 听No one needs encouraging, nowadays, to look in the mirror and feel really bad about themselves.

So I prefer Epiphany resolutions: to embark on this new regime like the three wise men heading off into the new world that lies ahead, not provoked by fear, but encouraged by hope.听听
