Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

On this day in 1980 John Lennon was shot dead.
It is one of those 鈥渨here were you when you heard the news鈥 moments.
For me I was on my bunk bed 鈥 top deck 鈥 and the radio was on. I climbed down and ran to my mum crying. I was 9.
It seems strange to me now that I was so connected to Lennon so young, but I was a political idealist by the age of 7, and his music spoke to me. I will admit, I was an odd child, and was more interested in the issues of Apartheid South Africa than I was playing with dolls.
Lennon鈥檚 songs were background anthems to my life.
I can鈥檛 even begin to tell you how many peace marches I went on in the 80s where thousands of people would spontaneously start singing 鈥淕ive Peace a Chance鈥.
As an adult though, I have struggled with the lyrics of arguable Lennon鈥檚 most famous solo song, 鈥淚magine鈥
I still love it. I completely understand why it is regularly voted one of the best songs of all time, and remains an anthem for peace all over the world. Yet it鈥檚 asking us to imagine a world where there isn鈥檛 anything to divide us 鈥 no countries, no religion, no possessions-for then-hopefully-we can find peace
My question is 鈥 why can鈥檛 we all be different and still find peace?
I like going to other countries 鈥 I like hearing different languages, seeing different customs, trying to experience the world through different eyes.
I鈥檓 a Muslim, but I like the fact that there are different religions 鈥 I gain a lot from talking to people of other faiths and hearing how they understand the Divine Creator of the entire Universe.
I don鈥檛 want to see myself, and my ideas, and my way of life, repeated back to me, in endless uniformity.
I like the fact that we鈥檙e all unique.
So for me, I don鈥檛 want to imagine a world where we erase all our differences and can then live together.
I want to stand with people of all faiths, races, genders, and whatever else you want to list to divide us, and say I love that you are different to me 鈥 but we are all human beings and I will not see you dehumanised. I will not see you set upon. I will live in peace with you.听听

For me, God is One, but its Creation is Beautifully Diverse.
