Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

In Ireland 鈥減utting an upstart back in their box鈥 is almost a national sport.听 Whether it鈥檚 sportspeople, musicians, writers鈥 Perhaps it鈥檚 the same here.听

I don鈥檛 like it.

Life is hard enough without those cruel, belittling, negative asides. For myself, I don鈥檛 need others to put me down, because a still small voice within my own head does that for me.

A good question to ask is: Does your inner voice fill you with positive energy or is it just another subconscious toxic destroyer?

The Bible insists that we reap what we sow; if I plant weeds, I鈥檒l get weeds; if I plant good seeds I鈥檒l have a good harvest. Likewise the inner voice plants good thoughts and bad.

I鈥檓 told we can have 50,000 thoughts a day. That鈥檚 impressive. But they remain a jumbled mess, unless I pick the best of them. I can either choose positive, uplifting thoughts, or negative demeaning thoughts. It鈥檚 up to me. That inner voice is either my best friend or my worst enemy.

And here鈥檚 the point: if I鈥檝e no enemy on the inside, the enemy on the outside doesn鈥檛 matter. Sports coaches say that it鈥檚 not aptitude that matters most, it鈥檚 attitude.

In spiritual direction we put it differently. We say 鈥淭he you you see is the you you鈥檒l be.鈥

Worry is another sign of negativity. Worry is like spending your life working a rocking chair 鈥 you expend mighty energy going nowhere.

For lasting inner peace, don鈥檛 download those fears and anxieties which cripple you. Download instead thoughts and plans that help you to live a fulfilled life. Control the controllables and enjoy the results.

The greatest boxer of all time, Muhammad Ali, overcame the crippling negativity of his upbringing with the mantra 鈥淚 am the Greatest鈥. He repeated it over and over to himself and to anyone who鈥檇 listen until he believed it. That鈥檚 how he became the greatest. Change happens from the inside out.

In God鈥檚 eyes I am the greatest and so are you. I believe that totally. 鈥淐ast all your worries on the Lord because he鈥檒l take care of you鈥 (1Peter 5:7)
