Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

On Saturday night, we鈥檒l be holding a Selichot service, meaning forgiveness, designed to get us into the mood for the upcoming Jewish High Holy Days. Within a short service, we鈥檒l be singing many of the important prayers and songs of the season. It鈥檚 deliberately utterly heart rending, with the choir singing their hearts out, the congregation joining in, and everyone getting ready for the High Holy Days鈥 soul searching.

For some people it is the most spiritually uplifting, if challenging, service of the year. Though designed merely to prepare us for the big festivals, it is late at night- in many congregations at midnight-, quiet, contemplative, and full of the most wonderful, evocative music.

I love it. And I find it strangely powerful. Scientists still don鈥檛 understand enough about music鈥檚 abilities to soothe or inspire us. We know it can bring huge relief to some people with mental illness. We know that, for some people, it is as necessary as eating and drinking- their brains simply don鈥檛 function well without it. We know that many famous conductors of great orchestras are increasingly interested in the effect of music on the mind, heart and soul. And at the Selcihot service, more than any other, I feel the power of that particular music in calming the mind, then challenging it, in raising us to a spiritual 鈥榟igh鈥, and then asking questions of us. 鈥淒id you do well this past year? Have you sinned? Have you made peace with those you have offended?鈥

We all have different musical tastes, but for all of us there are some songs or pieces, rock, pop, jazz, or classical , which press a particular memory button, bring back associations, and give us pause. Selichot does all of that- it鈥檚 a time when we allow the music to change our mood, set an agenda, and encourage us to look deep inside ourselves. Beautiful certainly, but also challenging. And an annual inspection of our souls, inspired by great music, is surely no bad thing for any of us!
