Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and The Steve Miller Band

Johnnie Walker and guests revisit classic albums by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and The Steve Miller Band.

Johnnie and David enjoy the breakthrough third album for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Damn The Torpedoes from 1979 and Steve Miller Band's ninth studio recording Fly Like An Eagle from May 1976.

Tom Petty says he felt like an outlaw - spending all day in court fighting record companies and then spending all night recording an illegal album. The Heartbreakers were an amazing live band but had to learn how to record a polished album in the studio with Jimmy Iovine, best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Patti Smith and Meatloaf at the time, who made them perform 60 takes on one track.

The success of The Joker gave Steve Miller the freedom and time to really plan his next album. He recalls how he recorded the title track five times and played it live for three years, before it was released. In the end the album yielded three big hit singles after taking just eleven days to record and three days to mix.
