Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

Ìý

An old pal of mine has just died. Like me, Ken was a Methodist minister. We had a lot in common. I lived my early life in a brickyard. He lived his as a bricklayer. He left school at 15 and worked on building sites. And that’s where, in all likelihood, he’d have stayed if it hadn’t been for something that happened to him while he was doing his mum’s shopping. He had to cross a public square where a preacher was standing on a soap box telling the Saturday morning crowd all about the love of Jesus. This attracted Ken’s attention; he was hooked and that started a process that led eventually to his becoming a preacher too.Ìý

Ìý

Most people don’t really have a clue about vicars and the like. They wear their collars the wrong way round and you see them at baptisms, weddings, and funerals. They’re the hatch, match and despatch brigade. Derek Nimmo, Dawn French and Rowan Atkinson have had us in stitches with stories about their fictional escapades. But there’s more to it than that. As my dear old friend Ken made clear. One day he read in the paper that the residents of a nearby street were refusing to leave their pre-war terraced homes to allow bathrooms to be built onto them. They just dug their heels in. Ken had an idea. He went to the Council and offered to build those bathrooms without requiring occupants to get out. And that’s just what Ken the brickie did. It wasÌý a win win situation with smiles all round.

Ìý

What Ken did was show that the duties and responsibilities of your job don’t have to stop you being yourself. He was a fine minister but never a holy joe. He remained a bricklayer at heart, practical and down-to-earth,-Ìý a bricklayer who chose to follow the teaching of a carpenter. I treasure his memory and thank God for him. May he rest in peace.
