Including California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas and, in honour of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by the Righteous Brothers.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear 'California Dreamin'' by The Mamas and The Papas and, in honour of the songwriting team of Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by The Righteous Brothers. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1944 of Sandy Posey by playing her first US hit 'Born A Woman'. Paul pays tribute to Julius LaRosa, who has recently died, by featuring his disc 'Torero'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Already Gone' by the Eagles and a different song with the same title by country duo Sugarland.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by the Small Faces and Shirley Bassey. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by Elton John and Dan Fogelberg.
Our R&B number ones are from 1998 and now by Brandy & Monica and Maxwell. We hear Country number ones from 1987 and this week by Randy Travis and Florida Georgia Line. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by 3 Doors Down and Twenty One Pilots. 'Black' by Dierks Bentley is the number one album and the best-selling song of the week is 'Can't Stop The Feeling!' by Justin Timberlake.
