Suits, Boots and Northern Roots

Scriptwriter Kay Mellor celebrates her memories of 1966, remembering the fashion, the music and the new high-rise housing.

Scriptwriter Kay Mellor celebrates 'Living in 1966' with the people who remember it best. She speaks to Rita Britton, who brought Mary Quant's mini-skirts from London to the mining community of Barnsley ,and tracks down a former cutter from Leeds tailoring giant Burton, to discuss the sharp suits they made for the World Cup-winning England squad. She hears from a local band who fondly remember playing a pop festival in Lincoln alongside the Who. In Sheffield, former clubbers share their musical memories of Peter Stringfellow's legendary King Mojo Club. Kay also learns how the concrete brutalism of Sheffield's architecture was leading the way in social housing, and hears from Mohammad Taj who remembers 1966 as the year when, as a 14-year-old, he moved from rural Kashmir to the cobbled streets of industrial Bradford.
