International Jazz Day Special - Stan Sulzmann Quartet and Gus Stirrat Band
Live from the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen, Kevin LeGendre marks International Jazz Day with music from saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and bassist Gus Stirrat and his band.
Kevin Le Gendre celebrates International Jazz Day with a special live edition from the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen featuring performances by saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and his quartet. Sulzmann has played with a variety of artists including US saxophonist Michael Brecker, pianist John Taylor and Mile Davis's close collaborator Gil Evans. Stan's band for this performance includes pianist Kit Downes, bassist Conor Chaplin and drummer James Maddren. Also on the bill, emerging Scottish jazz talent Gus Stirrat Band, featuring former winner of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician Award, pianist Alan Benzie.
In 2011, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. This year the host city is Washington D.C and will see President Obama hosting a Jazz at the Whitehouse event, along with various performance being organised by jazz communities across the world.
