St Agnes' Choral Society

St Agnes' Choral Society

St Agnes' Choral Society was founded in 1957 by the late Father Black and a number of musical enthusiasts from the local community on the Anderstown Road. Over the years the Society has welcomed members from a wealth of backgrounds and during adverse times became a peaceful and effective meeting point from both communities within Northern Ireland. Over the years St Agnes' has received great praise and recognition not only for the welcoming atmosphere and the ongoing camaraderie among its members, but also for the high level of talent within the company. 听St. Agnes' Choral Society is a well known premiere amateur musical theatre society, widely regarded as one of the top companies in Ireland.听 Year by year the company strives to provide first class performances, on a par with productions that are well known in the West End and Broadway.

The number of members continues to grow, and the company is able to attract many of the younger generation who they will hope will carry on the traditions of the St Agnes' Choral Society in future years.

Daryl Simpson

Daryl Simpson

Daryl Simpson, from Omagh, Northern Ireland, developed his love of music during schooling at Omagh Academy, which then led him to study at Queen鈥檚 University (B. Mus), Royal Irish Academy of Music (Dip. Mus), and Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (Pg.Dip.Mus & M.Mus and M.Opera).

After leaving Scotland, Daryl became an inaugural 鈥榊oung Associate Artist鈥 at Opera Theatre Company, performing in various operas, recitals and broadcasts. He was then accepted to the prestigious Opera Zurich Studio, where he went on to perform several roles including Tamino (Die Zauberfl枚te). His concert/oratorio performances include appearing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, as well as the Zurich Kammer Orchestra.

During his second year in Zurich, he was contacted by Matthew Gilsenan of the Celtic Tenors 听who invited him to join the group for a year to allow one of the singers some time off.听 He already knew Matthew and James Nelson from his time in Opera Ireland.听 So it seemed like a natural fit.听 It was to be for one year but now, ten years later, he is happy to be, in his own words - still treading the boards with the boys.

In September 1998 in the aftermath of the Omagh tragedy, Daryl formed the Omagh Community Youth Choir, bringing young people together to promote Peace and Reconciliation through music. 听OCYC has had unprecedented international success including recording with Lord Lloyd-Webber and appearing on The Royal Variety Show. Their collaboration with 鈥楶laying for Change鈥 scored a US Billboard No 10, and the choir headlined at Glastonbury Festival and saw a release of 鈥楢ll you Need is Love鈥 for Starbucks/Red.

Daryl also works as a Musical Director, Arranger and Vocal teacher but takes most pride from his mentoring work and developing young talent for a career in music.
