Paul Gambaccini with America's Greatest Hits
Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear '3 O'Clock Blues' by B. B. King and 'Hide Away' by Freddy King. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1977 of Gerard Way by playing 'Welcome To The Black Parade' by the band he formed - My Chemical Romance. Paul pays tribute to Gogi Grant, who has recently died, by featuring her American number one 'The Wayward Wind'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Rain' by The Beatles and a different song with the same title by Madonna.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by Dave Mason and Ian Matthews. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by The Seekers and Smokey Robinson.
Our R&B number ones are from 1963 and now by The Chiffons and Lalah Hathaway. We hear Country number ones from 2008 and this week by Trace Adkins and Tim McGraw. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by The Who and Twenty One Pilots. The number one album is 'This Is What The Truth Feels Like' by Gwen Stefani and the best-selling song of the week is 'No' by Meghan Trainor.
