Chris' Pause For Thought: Ruth Scott

Chris' Pause For Thought: Ruth Scott

Ruth Scott Anglican Priest and Quaker:

Earlier this year I went back to formal education - stimulating what Hercule Poirot would call my, 鈥渓ittle grey cells鈥. 鈥楲ittle鈥 is the operative word here. They seem to have shrunk considerably since I did my last MA! Back in January I was reading the same paragraphs in course books over and over again as I struggled to make sense of them. Scanning academic papers proved a wonderful cure for insomnia rather than stirring creative thought. Working out how to access articles and books in various on-line libraries left me feeling utterly inadequate, and trying to fit in all the studying around working full-time has made me wonder at times if I鈥檓 a complete masochist.

Thankfully, as the weeks have passed I鈥檝e begun to get back into deciphering academic writing. The specialist language is becoming more familiar, and the more I read, the more 鈥榙ots鈥 I鈥檓 able to join up. I鈥檝e just had to be disciplined about it all. 鈥楧iscipline鈥 is a word that generally doesn鈥檛 prompt positive responses. It has the feel of restricting freedom rather than opening up possibilities. In reality, few things that are worthwhile come without effort and commitment. If we struggle when we begin something new, it鈥檚 not a sign of stupidity or uselessness, but a reminder that it takes practice to think in new ways or develop new patterns of behaviour, whether that鈥檚 to do with studying, starting a different job, becoming a parent, building a new relationship or learning some new skill. It鈥檚 true in spiritual terms as well.

A sister in an enclosed order once told me that far from imprisoning her, the discipline of the daily routine in the convent contained her in such a way that her mind was able to fly free without her going mad. In Christian tradition the unbounded joy of new life at Easter comes only after the struggle and disciplined self-sacrifice of Lent. Understood correctly, discipline isn鈥檛 a kill-joy but the means by which we can really get to grips with, and learn to celebrate everything life has to offer.聽
