Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson in honour of producer Quincy Jones. Continuing our alphabetical look at the list, we also hear 'Me And Bobby McGee' by Janis Joplin. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1944 of Diana Ross by playing the full-length version of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'. Paul pays tribute to George Martin, who has recently died, by featuring 'Sister Golden Hair'- one of his many successful productions for the group America. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Travelin' Man' by Ricky Nelson and a different song with the same title by Stevie Wonder.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by The Searchers and Mumford & Sons. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by the Bee Gees and Technotronic featuring Felly.
Our R&B number ones are from 1962 and now by Sam Cooke and Lalah Hathaway. We hear Country number ones from 1999 and this week by Kenny Chesney and Blake Shelton. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Bruce Springsteen and Twenty One Pilots. The best-selling song of the week is '7 Years' by Lukas Graham.
