Switzerland’s glaciers retreating
Switzerland’s glaciers retreat and expand every year with the coming and going of the seasons. In recent years though, they have been melting more than they’ve been expanding, largely down to a warming climate. This week on ·¡Ã²°ù±è²¹, Darren Laing investigates the effect this is having on the communities where people live in close proximity to mountains and glaciers. Agriculture – where farms and vineyards make use of glacial meltwater. What will they do if or when the day comes when the glaciers no longer provide them with enough water? Also, tourism – towns and villages high in the mountains, dependent on winter sports tourists. How much of a danger are melting glaciers which fall apart and destabilise the surrounding earth?
