A revolution in neuro-imaging
By this time next year, Cardiff University'聽will boast a ground-breaking new facility which聽will help scientists to聽understand more about the causes of brain conditions like dementia, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia.聽In short, it will become the epicentre for European neuro-imaging.
Cardiff University's Brain Research Imaging聽Centre - or CUBRIC for short -聽is to be rehoused in a new building with some cutting-edge scanning technology. One of the scanners is a European-first and will allow scientists to study brain cells only 1000th of a millimetre across.
But as Adam Walton discovers聽when he pays a visit, the highly skilled and motivated team working at CUBRIC are just as important as this聽new equipment. He learns聽from聽Prof Derek聽Jones, director of CUBRIC,聽 what this聽拢44m聽project聽might deliver for Wales. Dr John Evans, Chief Physicist of the Magnetic Resonance Lab, explains how聽scanners work - and why this new set-up is unique. And Prof David Linden聽discusses how the combination of detailed imaging and genetic research at Cardiff, could bring progress in treatments for brain disorders like schizophrenia.
