The Deer Counter
Red deer are one of the iconic images of the Highlands. But their numbers are a source of controversy. Many conservationists believe that there are too many and that they are overgrazing our uplands. While some sporting estates say too many deer are being culled.
To inform the debate the Scottish Government needs an accurate count of the red deer population and to do that researchers count them from the air. Dougie went along to see how it’s done.
Should we reintroduce Lynx?
The lynx is a stunning cat but should it be roaming free in our countryside? This cat was once native in Scotland but was hunted to extinction more than a thousand years ago. Now there are proposals to re-introduce lynx to Scotland. Euan travels to Highland Wildlife Park to get a close up view of lynx and investigates the arguments for its re-introduction.
Isn’t offal awful?
Offal isn’t exactly a ‘must-have’ item on most people’s shopping lists. But Nick Nairn thinks it should be. He’s on a mission to convince us the there is nothing awful about offal. Dougie doesn’t look too sure!
Dougie and Nick take to the streets of Inverness in the Landward Food Van and attempt to feed the unsuspecting shoppers some lamb sweetbreads – that’s the pancreas to you and me!
