Tom Service talks to the legendary Russian-born pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy about his life in music and his thoughts on performing the works of the great composers that he has championed, from Bach to Chopin and Beethoven to Tchaikovsky. He tells Tom the inside story of the 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition, which he won jointly with the British pianist John Ogdon.Ìý Ashkenazy also talks about Shostakovich and musical life under Soviet rule, particularly in the conservatoires.Ìý He discusses the difference between Western and Russian interpretations of music and dismisses the idea of the Russian soul.Ìý Tom ends by asking him what motivates him to continue performing the music that has become so much a central part of his life.
