Crucial Vinyl: Smokey by Smokey Robinson

The Don's Crucial Vinyl, an album that has shaped his musical taste, is Smokey Robinson's 1973 debut solo album Smokey.

Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl (an album that has shaped his musical taste and helped make him who he is). He features three tracks from it and explains why it means so much to him.

This week he picks Smokey Robinson's debut solo album.

Don says,

'This one nearly slipped through my musical memory net!

Smokey Robinson's debut solo album, simply titled 'Smokey', was released in 1973, and was his first solo venture after leaving Motown soul supergroup The Miracles.

They were seriously tough act to follow, since they'd had a string of hits, and were one of the most influential outfits in pop and r 'n' b history.

This album saw Smokey Robinson take his place alongside label mates Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, not only as a master of emotive love songs, but also as someone who was tuned in to the social /political climate of the times - and all delivered by a man with a voice for whom the term 'dulcet tones' could have been conceived.'

Don's other selections cross time, space and genre and include Ed Rome, Sebastien Tellier, John Holt, Evy Jane and Hoagy Carmichael.
