鈥楢ltarwise by Owl-light鈥 by Dylan Thomas

In this special edition of The Verb as part of Radio 3鈥檚 鈥楧ylan Thomas Day鈥, recorded in front of an audience at Laugharne,聽Ian McMillan, Glyn Maxwell and Gwyneth Lewis read extracts from Dylan Thomas鈥檚 鈥楢ltarwise by Owl-Light鈥.

Gwyneth Lewis

Gwyneth Lewis

Gwyneth Lewis is the former National Poet of Wales, a novelist, memoirist and playwright who writes in both Welsh and English. Gwyneth shares with us her work in progress, 鈥楢dvantages of the Older Man鈥 (Seren) a novella which features the ghost of Dylan Thomas. Gwyneth explains her inspiration for the book, and explores the 鈥榩hysicality鈥 of Thomas鈥檚 poetry.

Glyn Maxwell

Glyn Maxwell

The poet and playwright Glyn Maxwell grew up with Dylan Thomas鈥檚 language; his mother was in an early stage version of 鈥楿nder Milk Wood鈥 with Richard Burton. Glyn talks about the 鈥榬ootedness鈥 evoked by 鈥楿nder Milk Wood鈥 and how that compares with his experience of growing up in the 鈥榥ew town鈥 of Welwyn Garden City. He reads an extract from radio play which will explore the idea of Welwyn Garden City 鈥榓s someone鈥檚 dream鈥, and explains the influence of 鈥楿nder Milk Wood鈥 on this piece of writing.聽

Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys

The singer-songwriter Gruff Rhys鈥 ( formerly of The Super Furry Animals) latest project is 鈥楢merican Interior鈥. An ambitious project, it is an album, a book, a film and an app. In 鈥楢merican Interior鈥, Gruff follows in the footsteps of his ancestor John Evans, who travelled America in the 18th century in search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans. He explains why he鈥檚 brought a John Evans puppet with him to the recording, and talks about the soundtrack he鈥檚 written for a new film about Dylan Thomas called 鈥楽et Fire to the Stars鈥.

Peter Finch

Peter Finch

Peter Finch is a poet, critic, and author who writes in both traditional and experimental forms. His latest book is 'Edging the Estuary' (Seren)

In a special commission for The Verb, Peter has created a mash-up/cut-up of Dylan Thomas鈥檚 difficult and surreal poem 鈥楢ltarwise by Owl-Light鈥. Peter explains how he dismantled the poem, and built it up again, commenting on Thomas鈥 unique place in Welsh culture.
