Pain management
This week Adam Walton investigates pain and pain management. We all, at some time, suffer from pain, whether it be a headache, or an injury, or more intense pain caused by an illness. The ways that we manage pain come under the spotlight in this week's Science Cafe.
Adam hears from Owen Hughes, heard of pain management at Bronllys hospital, which offers residential courses for those suffering chronic pain.
We discover how the most common painkillers - aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine work to combat pain, from Ron Eccles on the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff.
Science Cafe reporter Alan Daulby meets members of the Tenovus "Sing With Us" choir in Wrexham which brings together those who have cancer, or whose families have been affected by it. Weekly singing sessions appear to give a lift and some temporary relief to their pain.
And we hear about research by King's College, London which has been studying our sensitivity to pain, and potential new ways that could be used to manage it in the future using what is being called a genetic "dimmer swtich"
