China Sex Worker Detention
Sex workers in China are thought to have been detained by theÌýstate and heldÌýin an adminstrativeÌýsystem known as "custody and education". TheÌýsystem isÌýoverseen by public security officials rather than judges and unlike prisoners,Ìýthe detainees areÌýmade to payÌýliving costs and take compulsory tests for sexually transmittedÌýdiseases. The original intentionÌýwas to penalise unlawful behaviour that did not reach the level of a criminal offence but it has became "a penalty even harsher than criminal penalties," according toÌýa new report froma health and human rights group which wants the system abolished.Credits
