Mark Wilson is in Maine, USA, to hear about the work of the Maine Ulster-Scots Project from its Director, John Mann of Bowdoin.
John鈥檚 people came to America from Ulster in 1718; while on his wife鈥檚 side, the Mayburys came to Maine from Ballymoney in the 1720s, and Val Mann and her mother May share their family鈥檚 story with Mark. John takes Mark on an exclusive visit to the excavation of an Ulster Scots settlement dating from 1718, at the site of the former homestead of the McFadden family, on the shores of Merrymeeting Bay.
At the dig, Mark meets archaeologist Pam Crane, and Brad McFadden, whose family first settled there, nearly 300 years ago. Historian Chip Griffin believes that one lasting legacy of the Ulster Scots in Maine is their belief in equality for all, and Chip tells Mark an old Scots Irish proverb to remember.聽聽聽
