The Philippines declares a state of "National Calamity" to accelerate aid efforts following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan. The United Nations says aid workers are struggling to reach some of the nine million people affected, because roads and bridges have collapsed. At least ten thousand people are believed to have died.
