I鈥檝e been thinking about Madeleine Mccann鈥檚 family, and the response to the latest appeal.


I have to admit that in 2007 when I first heard the news, like so many other stories, I thought 鈥榯hat must be awful for them鈥�, but I didn鈥檛 really let it into my heart. Now I鈥檓 a father, with my own little girl, I feel completely differently, like I want to reach out to them.


I鈥檝e heard this distinction between feeling for someone and feeling with them described like this: One day, Sympathy and Empathy come across someone in a deep hole. Sympathy says 鈥榊ou poor thing, it looks really dark down there. Would you like a sandwich?鈥� Empathy, on the other hand, climbs down into the hole and says 鈥業 see you. It鈥檚 horrible down here, isn鈥檛 it?鈥�


The response to the latest Maddy appeal shows how many people are still in that hole with the family, that they still care, that they鈥檙e not leaving. What must it feel like for them, after all these years, to receive those calls, those letters, those emails? Such simple and small gestures.


All of us know someone with a missing piece of their heart - a parent who passed away many years ago; or some other past trauma. If it hasn鈥檛 really touched you, that鈥檚 okay, but it might be best to hold on to your sympathy - after all, who wants to be thrown a sandwich when they鈥檙e in a hole?


But if that person is really in your heart, it鈥檚 never too late to show it. It鈥檚 never too late to pick up the phone and say those empathic words: 鈥業鈥檝e been thinking about your loss, and I want you to know, I鈥檓 here with you.鈥� The smallest gesture can make a world of difference.


Mother Teresa said 鈥楴ot all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.鈥� What small thing will you do, today, to show someone that you still care?
