Bacharach and David

Celebrating the great song writing partnership of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Paul Gambaccini presents, with singers Graham Bickley, Mary Carewe, Abbie Osman and Sarah Lark.

Sunday Night is Music Night celebrates the great song writing partnership of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

The composer and lyricist met at the famous Brill building in New York in 1957. When the two produced ‘The Story of My Life' followed by ‘Magic Moments' for Perry Como, the recording industry realised that a new hit making machine had been born within it's walls.

During the sixties Bacharach and David wrote well over a hundred songs, including ‘There's Always Something There To Remind Me', ‘The Look Of Love' ‘ Do You Know The Way To San Jose', ‘I'll Never Fall In Love Again', ‘What's New Pussycat' and '24 Hours From Tulsa'.

Their most successful recording artist was Dionne Warwick, charting 38 of their singles, but many other artists queued up to record their songs, including Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, The Carpenters, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Sandy Shaw, Cher, BJ Thomas and Herb Alpert.

Tonight's Sunday Night Is Music Night, live from The Mermaid in London, features Bacharach and David's greatest hits, given a rare orchestral performance by the 60 piece Â鶹Éç Concert Orchestra conducted by Richard Balcombe.

Paul Gambaccini presents, with guests singers Graham Bickley, Mary Carewe, Abbie Osman and Sarah Lark.

enjoys a wide and varied career in all fields of music.

Ìý

As conductor he has been privileged to work with some of the world’s leading orchestras including Gothenburg Symphony, Orchestre National de Lille, Estonian National Symphony, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Prague Chamber Orchestra and in the UK the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Halle, City of Birmingham, Â鶹Éç Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National and Ulster Orchestras. He has been a regular conductor of the Â鶹Éç Concert Orchestra for nearly 20 years and for the past two seasons has conducted Proms in the Park in Hyde Park.

He is equally at home in opera – having conducted The Gondoliers at ENO, The Magic Flute with the English Chamber Orchestra and The Barber of Seville with the Ulster Orchestra – as he is in music theatre – having been Music Director in the West End for Phantom of the Opera, Carmen Jones, Aspects of Love, Guys and Dolls and Follies and, currently, Music Supervisor for Top Hat.

As a prolific orchestrator and arranger he has worked with artistes ranging from Sir Willard White to Michael Ball and Ruthie Henshall to Will Young and his recordings range from The Martyr of Antioch (Sullivan) to What the world needs now… the music of Burt Bacharach.

Paul Gambaccini celebrates his 40th anniversary as a national broadcaster on the 5th of October, 2013.Ìý He is the only person to have been at some point a regular on each of the first four Â鶹Éç radio networks and first four British terrestrial television networks.Ìý Paul made his Radio 1 debut in 1973 and his first Radio 4 appearance the following year.Ìý His rotating Radio 4 mini-series are COUNTERPOINT and AND THE ACADEMY AWARD GOES TO ---.Ìý He has been a frequent presenter of FRIDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT on Radio 2 and currently hosts AMERICA'S GREATEST HITS on Saturdays at 8 p.m.Ìý Gambaccini was co-author of THE GUINNESS BOOK OF BRITISH HIT SINGLES and related titles between 1977 and 1996.Ìý Combined sales of these volumes exceeded one and a half million copies.Ìý One of the founding broadcasters of Classic FM, Paul had a 13-year film review stint on first TV-am and then GMTV.Ìý He has made thousands of television appearances, including LIVE AID and his own mid-1980s series THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS.Ìý Gambaccini is the long-time host of the Ivor Novello Awards and presented the Sony Radio Academy Awards for 10 years, winning the career prize, The Gold Award, in 2007

I listened to the 60th anniversary edition of FNIMN, and felt great pride in my own involvement over the years in this great radio institution, although not quite for all 60 years - (I first appeared as a member of the Stephen Hill Choir in 1983) - but for at least half its life, and alarmingly for more than half of mine!

It was a nerve wracking first rehearsal at Golders Green Empire.Ìý My sister, opera singer Sue Bickley, (and already a choir member), had emphasised the importance of having a pencil to mark up the music. With said pencil behind my ear, I felt quite the professional but last minute rehearsal nerves demanded one final visit to the loo, and in slow motion, it fell from its lofty perch, into the loo and my heart sank as speedily as the pencil.

However, I rescued the catastrophe - you needn't concern yourself with the details, and here I am some 30 years on, at another FNIMN rehearsal, this time at Watford Coliseum in preparation for a live broadcast on October 4th at the Mermaid Theatre - armed with not one, but two pencils!

This edition of FNIMN is somewhat different from the norm in as much as conductor Richard Balcombe and I have been asked to present one of our own self-produced concert programmes, a programme already performed by various UK orchestras. Familiarity with the music will be a welcome bonus, but it will still be nerve wracking, as all live editions inevitably are - any slip-ups forever available on iPlayer for days to come!

As ever, to listen to the Â鶹Éç Concert Orchestra play anything is a treat, but to hear them play our Burt Bacharach programme is sure to be thrilling.

And indeed it was!Ìý The rehearsal now over, we will reconvene on the day of the concert.Ìý We four singers provide our own backing vocals and to sing as a group is a joy.Ìý Abbie, Mary and Sarah are enormous fun to work alongside and a delight to listen to. Incidentally, I wasÌý talking to Mary today, and we think it highly likely she was already a Stephen Hill choir member when I showed up for the first time. That makes us both very......experienced!

One always hopes an orchestra enjoys the music placed before them, but it doesn't always happen.Ìý However it was a delight today to see so many singing along, swaying to the Bacharach beat whilst playing with such gusto and enthusiasm. Our producer Anthony Cherry was pleased, our musical director Richard Balcombe, pleased,Ìý and our assistant producer Ruth Beazley became our fifth backing vocalist!!Ìý We singers had a ball!

All of us very much hope the remaining vital ingredient to this programme's success - YOU, dear listener - will singalong at home and enjoy this glorious celebration of Bacharach & David on Friday October 4th at 8 o'clock.

Sarah made her West End debut at the age of 17 creating the role of the Little Girl in Cameron Mackintosh's original production of The Witches of Eastwick at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. At the age of 21 she was one of the youngest ever students to complete the postgraduate musical theatre course at The Royal Academy of Music. She graduated with distinction and received the Diploma of the Royal Academy for an outstanding public performance for her portrayal of Addapearle in The Wiz.
Having worked professionally as an actress in the West End and on the fringe for several years, she rose to prominence when she appeared as a finalist on I'd Do Anything, Â鶹Éç1's Search for a Nancy for the West End revival of Oliver!. Following the competition she was cast as understudy to the role in the production and played Nancy opposite Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili, and Griff Rhys-Jones on many occasions.
Other Theatre Credits Include: Carries War (UK tour), covered and played Sophie and Lisa in Mamma Mia! (Prince Of Wales Theatre), Lucy Van Pelt in the West End production of Snoopy the Musical (Jermyn Street and The New Players Theatre) and Scottie Fitzgerald in Beautiful and Damned (Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford). Sarah also appeared in the original production of Whistle Down the Wind at Lord Lloyd Webber's Sydmonton estate.

Sarah recently played Ms Mona in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas at the Union Theatre, and Snow White in Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs at the Churchill Theatre Bromley. She can currently be seen in the West End production of Les Miserables.

Mary Carewe is one of the most accomplished and versatile concert and recording artists in the UK. Her repertoire incorporates everything from musical theatre and film music to 20th century cabaret and contemporary classical music.

Mary has received high-acclaim for her performances of the iconic James Bond themes with such renowned orchestras as the Philharmonia, The Hallé, CBSO, Ulster Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Czech National Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, National Symphony (Washington), Florida Orchestra and Pacific Symphony.Ìý Mary made her Carnegie Hall debut with Carl Davis and the New York Pops, and appears regularly at the Royal Albert Hall, London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mary first came to international recognition through the Adiemus projects with Karl Jenkins – the mixture of classical orchestra and multi-tracked female chanting becoming an instant hit. Her solo recordings include collections of West End, Broadway and Film Music repertoire for Chandos, Silva Screen and Warner Classics.Ìý She has also recorded contemporary music by Thomas Adès for EMI, Britten for NMC, Peter Maxwell-Davies (Resurrection) for Collins Classics and The Truth about Love for ASV. Spring 2012 saw the release of Serious Cabaret for Orchid Classics, devised and recorded with pianist Philip Mayers.

As a serious cabaret specialist, Mary has appeared at the Théâtre du Châtelet and Maison de Radio-France in Paris, Salle Pleyel, Festival de l’Ile de France, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Aldeburgh and Cheltenham Music Festivals, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Casa da Música in Porto, Opera Butxaca in Barcelona, the Berlin Philharmonie, The Sage Gateshead and King’s Place, London.
