BLOG :: Sian's sporting life

I was once banned from the First Division football terraces after I took issue with the fans behind me, who were swearing and hurling vitriolic abuse at the players as they left the pitch, after a particularly disappointing game. My sons were furious that I'd chastised the supporters and didn't want me doing it again. Their Dad pointed out that it was a working class club - the fans had spent an enormous amount of their wages on a season ticket and if the pampered players couldn't deliver, they deserved all they got.Ìý It's hard sometimes, to understand the passion that football can generate. I come from a rugby family, my Grandfather played for and ran the Llanelli Scarlets, my brothers were fantastically fast wingers at their local clubs and we grew up in the era of JPR and Gareth Davis. But rugby, even in the throes of Six Nations, doesn't seem as tribal as football, where your weeks can rise and fall, depending on how your team did.
Our guest on Saturday Live this week understands the passion football can generate. Heather Rabbatts helped run Millwall FC for a while and has also become the first female board member of the FA. She is a pretty remarkable woman, is Heather. She left school with just two 'O' levels, yet went on to become a barrister and then to occupy positions in some of Britain's biggest institutions, including the LSE, the Â鶹Éç and the Royal Opera House.Ìý
Another of our guests, Stef, knows what it's like to have been dealt the wrong hand, early in life. SheÌý lived in a notorious part of Glasgow, her brother was jailed and she became the "bad girl" of the estate. She tells us how she turned things around in her twenties and is now helping others, in a similar situation.
After the tragedy in a sink hole in America last weekend, we talk to a the man who tries to locate them in this country. The UK's most prolific game show contestant tells us the tricks of the trade and we're snipping at the dressmakers table with the granddaughter of a seamstress.
We've got more of your thank yous for good deeds done and we hear why a baritone loves his snaps, plus we go right back to the start of the game, for our Inheritance Tracks, with footballer Robbie Savage.
Kick off on Saturday, at 9am. We look forward to having you in the crowd. Mind your language, though.Ìý
