Gillian Marles looks at Scotland's call centre industry. Centres have been branded the dark satanic mills of the 21st century but are a major employer across the central belt.
This week, Gillian Marles looks at Scotland's call centre industry. Centres have been branded the dark satanic mills of the 21st century yet they employ one in 30 of the working population across the central belt and the industry has grown by 54% since 2003.
However growth slowed after work moved to countries such as India and the Philippines. But now much of it is coming home - literally. There are growing numbers of people servicing some of the world's biggest companies from their back bedroom.
Gillian speaks to Professor Philip Taylor, a world authority on the call centre industry. She hears from the chief executive of one of the world's biggest call centre groups who warns of the urgent need to embrace social media and she talks to a home worker on Bute.
