Litir 670: T貌mas Garnett agus Tobar Leac an t-Sagairt

鈥橲 ann tric, nuair a tha mi a鈥 coimhead air mapaichean dhen Gh脿idhealtachd, a bhios mi a鈥 mothachadh ainm-脿ite inntinneach a tha ag innse dhomh gu bheil st貌iridh co-cheangailte ris. Gu m矛-fhortanach, uaireannan tha e doirbh no eadhon do-dh猫ante an st貌iridh a lorg.

听听听听听听听听听听听 O chionn ghoirid th脿inig mi tarsainn air ainm dhen t-se貌rsa sin ann am Muile 鈥 beinn air a bheil Maol Tobar Leac an t-Sagairt. Tha e ann am meadhan ceann a deas an eilein. Tha e faisg air an rathad eadar Creag an Iubhair, 脿s am faighear b脿t鈥-aiseig chun an 脪bain, agus Fionnphort, 脿s am faighear b脿t鈥-aiseig gu ruige 脤 Chaluim Chille.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Maol Tobar Leac an t-Sagairt. Feumaidh gu bheil tobar faisg air l脿imh. Agus, nuair a tha thu ga ghoogladh air an eadar-l矛on, tha gu dearbh fear ann 鈥 Tobar Leac an t-Sagairt. Ach c貌 sagart a bh鈥 ann? Agus carson a chaidh an tobar ainmeachadh air a shon?

听听听听听听听听听听听 Uill, bha T貌mas Garnett ann anns a鈥 bhliadhna seachd ceud deug, naochad 鈥檚 a h-ochd (1798), agus fhuair esan an st貌iridh. Sgr矛obh e mu dheidhinn anns an leabhar aige Observations on a Tour Through the Highlands and Part of the Western Isles of Scotland. Tha e a鈥 dol air ais do linn Chaluim Chille.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Chaochail sagart a bh鈥 ann an Torasaigh, ann an taobh sear Mhuile, a鈥 f脿gail be脿rn ann do chuideigin eile a bheathachadh fhaighinn an sin. Bha gu le貌r de shagartan a鈥 fuireach c貌mhla ri Calum Cille ann an Eilean 脤. Agus dh鈥檌arr dithis aca air Calum Cille am beathachadh fhaighinn ann an Torasaigh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Cha robh Calum Cille airson dragh a chur air duine seach duine aca. Mar sin, thuirt e riutha 鈥 am fear a bu luaithe a ruigeadh Torasaigh, 鈥檚 e a gheibheadh a bheathachadh. Ach 鈥檚 e an oidhche a bh鈥 ann, agus thoirmisg e an dithis bho bhith a鈥 t貌iseachadh gus an tigeadh a鈥 mhadainn. Chan eil d霉il gun d鈥 fhuair sagart seach sagart cadal.

听听听听听听听听听听听 An ath mhadainn, dh鈥檉halbh fear dhiubh na bu tr脿ithe na 鈥檓 fear eile. Lorg an sagart eile a鈥 chiad fhear, agus e na laighe marbh ri taobh an tobair. Bha d霉il gun robh e air uiread de chabhaig a dh猫anamh 鈥檚 gun do dh鈥櫭瞝 e cus uisge, agus gur e sin a thug b脿s dha. Bha cuid, ge-t脿, dhen bheachd gun robh an d脿rna sagart air am fear eile a mhurt, airson d猫anamh cinnteach gum faigheadh e a bheathachadh. Co-dhi霉, chaidh an tobar ainmeachadh airson an t-sagairt. Tha e a鈥 gi霉lain an ainm fhathast 鈥揟obar Leac an t-Sagairt.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Nuair a leugh mi barrachd de dh鈥檈arrann leabhar Gharnett mu a thuras a Mhuile, th脿inig mi tarsainn air cunntas inntinneach de sheanfhacal G脿idhlig a chuala an t-霉ghdar: Sgr矛obh e mar seo e: Is mairg a loisgeadh a thiompan ris. Seo mar a tha e ga mh矛neachadh anns an leabhar: Among the proverbs which are common in this and some of the islands is the following one: when you meet with ingratitude from a person who has benefited by your means, where you had reason to expect a very different conduct, it is common to say, 鈥渨hat a fool I was to burn my harp for him or her鈥. Is mairg a loisgeadh a thiompan ris. Bheir mi s霉il air an t-seanfhacal sin anns an ath Litir.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach:

Is mairg a loisgeadh a thiompan ris: pity [the person] who would burn his harp for him. We鈥檒l see a variation of this in next week鈥檚 Litir. The story behind the proverb is explained in the Litir above. Mairg (dialectally meirg) is both a feminine noun meaning 鈥減ity, woe, subject of regret鈥 and an adjective meaning 鈥減itiable, deplorable, woeful鈥. It is rather old-fashioned today and generally only found in proverbs and expressions, usually combined with the assertive verb, is. Here are some examples: a鈥 mhairg dhut 鈥渨oe to you鈥; is mairg dhut nach tigeadh tu 鈥渋t鈥檚 a pity you could not come鈥; is mairg a dh猫anadh subhachas ri dubhachas fir eile 鈥減ity him who rejoices in another鈥檚 woe鈥.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

tha e doirbh no eadhon do-dh猫ante: it鈥檚 difficult or even impossible.
