On this week’s Eorpa, Darren Laing reports from Germany where the government has decided to phase out nuclear power by 2022. After the Fukushima disaster last year the German Chancellor Angela Merkel performed a policy U-turn when she announced her previous plan to extend the life of Germany’s nuclear plants would be replaced by an accelerated shut-down of the entire sector. Safely and security of energy supply were cited as reasons. The hope now is that renewable energy and clean coal will fill the void, in addition to a drive to save more energy. Will it work though?

The legacy of Euro 2004 in Portugal

In 2004 Europe’s most prestigious football tournament came to Portugal- a month-long festival of football. In addition to entry to the tournament without having to play qualifying matches, there was hope that the tournament would benefit business, be a boost for football and would be a boost to morale for the Portuguese public. Eight years on, however, many feel that the benefits of holding the tournament are hard to pinpoint, and that the brand new stadia, which were vital to the success of the tournament, are an increasing burden on local authorities and football clubs.
