6 Music begins a month-long celebration of the vinyl format with Pete Paphides talking to musicians who are avid record collectors.
The former chief rock critic at The Times - who now writes for The Guardian and Mojo - is a self-confessed vinyl junkie with a $1m collection. Earlier this year, Paul Weller and Laura Marling shared rarities and memories with Pete, who also got to rifle through Norman Cook's record collection. Guests this month include Florence Welch, Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, John Simm, Ryan Adams, Seasick Steve, Wild Beasts, Hot Chip and Young Knives.
In the first show of the series, Pete visits Damon Albarn in his studio. The Blur frontman-turned musical polymath reveals a vinyl collection that's as diverse as his own repertoire, featuring Adam Ant, The Specials, Cat Stevens, some African funeral music and a World War II oratorio. Damon also chats to Pete about early band rehearsals at school; being beaten up for his roles in musicals; The X Factor; and visiting The Casbah in Algiers.
Vinyl Revival continues next Sunday with a glimpse into Florence Welch's record collection and it will culminate in a day-long celebration of vinyl on New Year's Day.
