ETA
After killing over 800 people in more than 40 years in the name of Basque independence, ETA has proclaimed a ceasefire in its armed campaign. This is not the first time they have made such a declaration, however, and the Spanish government has said that they will not be satisfied until ETA lays down its arms forever. How good are the chances of a lasting peace this time?

Mine safety in Turkey
Mine safety was brought to the world’s attention last year with the extraordinary story of the Chilean miners. The full dangers of the profession were realised a month after the Chile rescue, when 29 men died in an explosion in a New Zealand mine. China and Russia have the worst safety record in the world. Turkey is in third place. This record was emphasised last May when 30 men lost their lives in a mining accident in a northern region. Some criticised the government for not doing enough to regulate the industry in order to ensure the safety of miners.
