Beatha Ghlaiste (Imprisoned)

Episode 19 of 20

Scotland sends more people to prison per head of population than any other country in Europe. But are more prisons really the answer?

Tha barrachd den mhòr-shluagh air a chur dhan phrìosan ann an Alba gach bliadhna, na ann an dùthaich eile san Roinn Eorpa. Thathar a' meas gu bheil 8000 ann am prìosanan na h-Alba an-dràsta, agus fiu 's aig an sin chan eil rùm gu leor ann dhaibh, is na prìosanan loma-lan mar a tha iad, gun rùm gu leòr annta. Ach an e prìosanan ùra am freagairt ge-tà? No am bu chòir dhuinn coimhead air dòighean eile air an àireamh-phrìosanach a lughdachadh? A bharrachd air an sin tha a' mhòr-chuid de na priosanaich ann an Alba air a bhith fo ghlais roimhe. Ach carson a tha an suideachadh cho dona san dùthaich seo? Le bhith a' bruidhinn ris na daoine a b' àbhaist a bhith an sàs anns an t-seann shiostam agus an fheadhainn a tha ag obair anns na prìosanan san latha an diugh, bidh Trusadh a' sireadh an t-slighe air adhart.

Scotland sends more people to prison per head of population than any other country in Europe. There are approximately 8000 prisoners behind bars in this country, and the prisons are full to capacity, with overcrowding a major problem. Are new prisons really the answer? Or should we look at other options to reduce the prison population? Most of Scotland's prisoners have been imprisoned before, so why is the situation so bad in this country? By speaking to those who used to work in the old prison system, and those who work in the prisons today, this programme explores the way ahead.
