Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Opera Singer

Stephen Sackur talks to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, one of the great opera singers of modern times, and asks what the future for opera is in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the great opera singers of modern times. She made her breakthrough performance in 1971 at London's Covent Garden and sang at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana ten years later, a performance which brought her to the attention of millions of people around the world.

More recently, she launched a quest to discover new opera talent in Britain but she also sparked controversy when she dismissed the popular music show Britain's Got Talent as 'whizz bang and whizz bang disappears'. So what is the future for opera in an increasingly crowded marketplace?
