Martin McGuinness says the British and Irish governments have been in contact with dissident republicans in recent weeks. But who's talking?
The Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness says he knows that the British and Irish governments have been talking with dissident Republicans. A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Office said you cannot have meaningful talks with people who are not committed to peaceful means of pursuing their goals. In Dublin, a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said "it has never been our practice to speak to these people". So what exactly is going on?
