Andreas Brantelid, Katrine Gislinge

Andreas Brantelid (cello) and Katrine Gislinge (piano) perform at the 2010 City of London Festival. Schumann: 5 Stucke im Volkston. Sibelius: 2 Pieces, Op 77. Chopin: Cello Sonata.

The second in a series of chamber concerts recorded live by current Radio 3 New Generation Artists at this year's City of London Festival. Today's recital takes place in the wonderfully named church of St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe, a church that has undergone several episodes of destruction and rebuilding over the centuries.

This concert from cellist Andreas Brantelid and pianist Katrine Gislinge celebrates the bicentenaries of both Schumann and Chopin. Schumann felt the cello closely resembled the baritone voice, and his "5 Stucke im Volkston" (Five pieces in Folk Style) are song-like in their construction. Chopin's large-scale cello sonata was performed at the composer's final public concert at the City of London's Guildhall, not long before his untimely death. Also in today's concert, two rarely heard devotional pieces for cello by Sibelius.
