Guy's away so it's Rob Hughes' Through The Pines Uncle Tupelo's 20th Anniversary Special.
2010 is the 20th anniversary of the release of Uncle Tupelo's debut LP No Depression, named after the old Carter Family song. 1990 is often cited as Year Zero in alt. country. Raised on '80s hardcore punk as much as the classic sounds of The Carter Family and the Louvin Brothers, Uncle Tupelo redefined the parameters of country music. A 'No Depression' internet fanclub and chat group soon grew, followed by (in 1995) the launch of No Depression magazine, which became the leading voice of the Americana movement. As Whiskeytown were to sing: "So I started this damn country band / Because punk rock is too hard to sing."
This 2-hour show traces the roots of the music itself - back to Hank Williams, The Carter Family, the Louvin Brothers, the Stanley Brothers - as well as showcasing the bands who became the new flag bearers for the other side of Nashville: Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams, Son Volt, Wilco, Calexico, Willard Grant Conspiracy and more. It also takes us right up to today, with The Low Anthem, Neko Case, The Felice Brothers, The Duke & The King, Deer Tick, Richmond Fontaine and more.
