Litir 457: P脿draig Grannd
Chan fhada gus am bi an latha oirnn a-rithist nuair a bhios daoine a鈥 cuimhneachadh na thachair aig 叠濒脿谤 Ch霉il Lodair air an t-siathamh latha deug dhen Ghiblean, seachd ceud deug, ceathrad 鈥檚 a sia (1746). 鈥橲 d貌cha gum bi barrachd dhaoine nan 脿bhaist aig C霉il Lodair am-bliadhna leis gu bheil ionad-taisbeanaidh 霉r aig Urras N脿iseanta na h-Alba ann.
Tha mi a鈥 smaoineachadh air C霉il Lodair oir bha mi a鈥 leughadh o chionn ghoirid mu Ph脿draig Grannd 鈥 Dubrach no Auld Dubrach mar a chainte ris. Tha e ainmeil oir b鈥 esan am fear mu dheireadh a chaochail a bh鈥 air a bhith an l脿thair aig C霉il Lodair air latha a鈥 bhatail. Chaochail e ann an ochd ceud deug, fichead 鈥檚 a ceithir (1824).
Rugadh P脿draig Grannd ann am baile beag air a bheil Dubrach, a tha ri taobh Uisge D猫 ann an sg矛re Br脿igh Mh脿rr ann an Siorrachd Obar Dheathain. Uill, 鈥檚 e Dubrach an dreach Beurla air an ainm. Ann an G脿idhlig 鈥檚 e An Dubh-bhruach. Ach 鈥檚 e dreach na Beurla a bh鈥 air P脿draig mar far-ainm 鈥 Dubrach. Bha Seumasachd gu math l脿idir anns an sg矛re sin 鈥 anns an robh a鈥 chuid a bu mhotha dhen t-sluagh nan G脿idheil agus nan Caitligich.
Bha P脿draig d矛reach bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois nuair a th貌isich ciad ar-a-mach nan Seumasach ann an seachd ceud deug 鈥檚 c貌ig-deug (1715). Ach nuair a th脿inig Bliadhna a鈥 Phrionnsa, bha e aig an aois cheart airson a chlaidheamh a thogail as leth The脿rlaich 脪ig. Leig e dheth a chuid obrach mar th脿illear agus chaidh e an cois arm a鈥 Phrionnsa.
Bha e gu math treun, agus chaidh aithris gun robh e ri gaisgeachd mh貌r aig 叠濒脿谤 Sliabh a鈥 Chlamhain no the Battle of Prestonpans mar a chanar ris ann am Beurla. R脿inig e 矛re s脿irdseant-m脿idsear agus bha e fhathast ann an arm a鈥 Phrionnsa nuair a chaill na Seumasaich aig C霉il Lodair, ged a bhathar ag r脿dh gun do mharbh e fh猫in grunn saighdearan dearga air an latha sin. Chaidh a chur an gr猫im agus chaidh a chur don phr矛osan ann an Cathair Luail ann an Sasainn.
Ach rinn e a dhol-脿s. Thill e don Gh脿idhealtachd. Tha diofar aithrisean ann air na thachair dha an uair sin. Tha cuid ag r脿dh gun do thill e don Dubh-bhruach. Ach cha bhiodh sin ro choltach oir chaidh gearastan de shaighdearan dearga a st猫idheachadh an sin an d猫idh Ch霉il Lodair. Tha cuid eile ag r脿dh gun robh e na th脿illear ann an Ach an Droighinn, baile beag ri taobh Baile a鈥 Chaisteil Br脿igh Mh脿rr. Ge bith d猫 thachair dha aig an 脿m sin, an ceann greis bha e a鈥 fuireach ann an Gleann Lethnochd ann am Br脿igh Aonghais.
Ph貌s e t猫 M脿iri Chuimeanach a bha m貌ran na b鈥 貌ige na e. Tha e coltach gun robh ise cuideachd 脿 Br脿igh Mh脿rr. Bha dithis chloinne aca. Chaidh na bliadhnaichean seachad agus chaochail M脿iri aig aois seasgad 鈥檚 a c貌ig (65) ann an ochd ceud deug 鈥檚 a h-aon-deug (1811). Chaidh a tiodhlacadh far an robh iad a鈥 fuireach 鈥 ann an Gleann Lethnochd.
Bha P脿draig 鈥 no Dubrach 鈥 gu math aithnichte mar fhear a bh鈥 air a bhith a-muigh leis a鈥 Phrionnsa. Ach bha e gu bhith a鈥 f脿s na b鈥 ainmeile buileach. Oir nuair a bha e ceud 鈥檚 a h-ochd bliadhna a dh鈥檃ois, choinnich e ris an R矛gh. Am biodh an seann Seumasach seo de貌nach aideachadh gun do rinn e mearachd ann am Bliadhna a鈥 Phrionnsa? Ch矛 sinn d猫 thuirt e ris an R矛gh an ath-sheachdain.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach
Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach: Br脿igh Aonghais: the upland country of Angus. The original for the anglicised Angus is the Gaelic Aonghas (just like the personal name and, in fact, the听county/district name probably derives from a personal name). But in Gaelic we differentiate听between the high ground (the 鈥淎ngus Glens鈥) and the low ground to the south and east of Strathmore, including the strath. The high ground is Br脿igh Aonghais and the flat country is Machair Aonghais and it would be normal in Gaelic to be more specific than just saying听鈥淎辞苍驳丑补蝉鈥.
Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach
Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach: b鈥 esan am fear mu dheireadh a chaochail a bh鈥 air a bhith an l脿thair aig C霉il Lodair air latha a鈥 bhatail: he was the last man to die who had been听present at Culloden on the day of the battle.
